Book: R. Crumb's Heroes of Blues, Jazz, & Country

A fine collection of r.crumb drawings of blues and country musicians from the 20’s and 30’s. Each sketch includes a short bibliography and the book comes with a CD of selected music.

Book: Memories of Ice

Wow. I think this series has surpassed Martin’s Ice and Fire. I have to respect any epic fantasy author who can manage to work in not one, but two cantankerous puppets only three books in. For all I know, the fourth book is all puppets all the time. And I’ll read it, too.

Slow Poetry and the Apocalypse

Part 2: Slow Poetry and the Apocalypse

This continues the introduction started in the first part. And if you read it, welcome back. Now we’re going to get our hands dirty and write some code. But first, let’s get some assumptions out of the way.

My Assumptions About You

I will proceed as if you have a basic working knowledge of writing synchronous programs in Python, and know at least a little bit about Python socket programming. If you have never used sockets before, you might read the socket module documentation now, especially the example code towards the end. If you’ve never used Python before, then the rest of this introduction is probably going to be rather opaque.

In Which We Begin at the Beginning

Part 1: In Which We Begin at the Beginning

Preface

Someone recently posted to the Twisted mailing list asking for something like the “Twisted introduction for people on a deadline”. Full disclosure: this isn’t it. On the spectrum of introductions to Twisted and asynchronous programming in Python, it may be on the exact opposite end. So if you don’t have any time, or any patience, this isn’t the introduction you are looking for.

Book: Nonzero: The Logic of Human Destiny

A brilliant survey of human history through the lens of game theory, though Wright tends to get a little light-headed towards the end when he’s speculating about consciousness.

Book: Liar's Poker: Rising Through the Wreckage on Wall Street

Lewis certainly writes a good story, this one about his time as a bond salesman on Wall Street during the 80’s. Now I feel like I don’t need to read “Bonfire of the Vanities”.

Book: Spook Country

Looks like modern technology has finally caught up to the point where Gibson can write about the present in his trademark techno-apocalyptic style. Good stuff.

Book: Lords of Finance: The Bankers Who Broke the World

I seem to be doing a bit of a survey of the early twentieth century. In this case, a study of the four main central bankers of the period and their role in the disasters, financial and otherwise, that befell us throughout. According to this author, their folly and tragedy was clinging to the gold standard long after it had become a hindrance.

Wedding Pictures

Instead of getting my own scanner, I decided to let ScanCafe do it. You send off your negatives and get them back with a DVD of the scans. It takes a while, but the quality is great and you don’t have to do any real work. So here is all the pictures from our wedding day.

Book: Just And Unjust Wars: A Moral Argument With Historical Illustrations

A well-written and well-reasoned analysis of justice in warfare and the justice of warfare.
