Book: From A Changeling Star

Another book I read a long time ago and can’t remember at all.

Book: Mirrorshades

An anthology of cyberpunk from William Gibson, Greg Bear, Rudy Rucker, and others. I’m pretty sure this was good.

Book: Soccer in Sun and Shadow

Galeano’s wonderful commentary on the history of soccer was clearly written by a lover of the game.

Book: The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay

Brilliant.

Book: Oracle in a Nutshell

A great reference to Oracle. Note that despite the ‘Nutshell’ name, the book is 900 pages long.

Book: The Elfstones of Shannara

I believe I really enjoyed this fantasy novel, one of Brooks’s earlier works.

Book: Just For Fun

In this light but enjoyable book, Torvalds recounts the history of the creation of the Linux kernel. It is accessible to non-technical people and filled with Torvald’s blunt Finnish remarks on the meaning of life and sundry other topics.

Book: Climbing Mount Improbable

In this work Dawkins takes care to explain how the concept of randomness has been over-emphasized in the popular understanding of Darwinian evolution. He presents numerous examples showing the critical role of non-random natural selection, not random mutation, in the evolution of seemingly designed creatures.

Book: The Postman

After reading several of David Brin’s essays I decided to read The Postman. Then I glanced at my bookshelf and realized I had already read it. Oh well, maybe I shall read it again. Hopefully it was better than the movie.

Book: The Pragmatic Programmer

A very nice book about software engineering as a craft. Lots of good, and a few debatable, suggestions about improving your programming craftsmanship.
