Book: Longitudes and Attitudes
A collection of Friedman’s New York Times editorials starting a few months before 9/11. Friedman writes about terrorism, globalization, and America’s relationship with the world. His writing is thoughtful, penetrating, and passionate.
Book: Generations
Strauss & Howe present their generational theory of American history. In their framework, US history is a series of generational cycles comprising four distinct peer personalities. Each cycle is punctuated by both a civic and a spiritual crisis.
I found myself marveling at both the explanatory and predictive power of this theory. Even present day events, including the war on Iraq and our ballooning budget deficit fall within its predictions. Well worth checking out!
Book: Beginning Perl for Bioinformatics
A nice little book for biologists wanting to learn Perl. It has some useful information for programmers wanting to learn computational biology, but only a light primer.
Book: The Computer Consultant's Guide
A how-to guide on the various aspects of running your own computer consulting business. This makes a nice companion to Working for Yourself.
Book: Dooms Day Book
Book: Necronomicon
The book has a high camp value as an owned object. But it’s deadly dull to read.
Book: The Intentional Stance
This collection of articles presents Dennett’s theory of intentionality, the philosophical study of belief, desire, and rational behavior. Dennett also compares his view to that of related philosophers. I always enjoy reading Dennett – his style is crisp and punchy.
