Book: Accounting The Easy Way

I bought this book when I was developing GnuCash and I wanted to get a better handle on business accounting. This book is a good introduction to double-entry accounting for businesses.

Book: GNU Autoconf, Automake, and Libtool

A nice, thorough treatment of these important software development tools.

+ autoconf

+ automake

+ libtool

Book: Extreme Programming Explained

An introduction to the software engineering methodology known as Extreme Programming or XP. This is a good introduction to this interesting approach to software development. This book really sold me on the value of automated testing. And the development strategy “focus first on today’s problem” resonated as well. I found “pair programming” to be a bit odd, though. I suspect that technique only works well with some kinds of personalities.

Book: Crypto: How the Code Rebels Beat the Government

Steven Levy tells a great story. I enjoyed this history of the development of public-key cryptography even more than Hackers: Heroes of the Computer Revolution

Book: .NET Framework Essentials

A pretty good overview of the .NET system. You might be interested in a free implementation of .NET.

Book: Advanced UNIX Programming

A smallish text on UNIX programming. I have to admit I don’t remember much of it.

Book: Design Patterns

The famous book by the “Gang of Four” (not the ones from the so-called Cultural Revolution in China) about sound and useful patterns in object-oriented software engineering.

Book: POSIX Programmers Guide

This book is a guide to the odd and crufty POSIX standard for operating system calls. It can be very useful at times.

Book: UNICODE — A Primer

A guide to the unicode character standard. Very comprehensive.

Book: A Guide to Latex2e

If you ever have need to use the quirky document preparation program latex, this book is a good reference to have.
